Woodley Park Duke’s Counter
Tell us a little bit about how long you’ve been in business and how you got started.
Duke‘s Counter opened in July and is our second location; Duke‘s Grocery opened in Dupont Circle in 2013. The goal from the beginning was a place we would want to bring our families and friends for creative eats and fun drinks in a relaxed, comfortable environment. The inspiration comes from East London, a funky juxtaposition of classic greasy spoons, hole-in-the-wall ethnic spots and ultra sleek avant-garde restaurants that created a truly unique food scene.
Why did you decide to locate in Woodley Park? What appeals to you about this neighborhood?
It’s a historic, vibrant and friendly place. You get the best of both worlds; walk one block and it feels suburban. Another block and it’s busy like downtown. You have a great residential community, grand hotels, excellent schools and of course the National Zoo. The neighbors have been really welcoming.
What makes your business noteworthy?
We started with favorites from Duke‘s Grocery and expanded from there, so the Proper Burger, monster sandwiches and RAMMY Award-winning Brunch remain fixtures. We’ve added eight draft beer lines, a fryer and Kids Menu. Creative cocktails and a full bar feature during the 12:00-7:00pm Happy Hour.
Do you offer any specials or benefits for neighborhood residents?
All employees of the National Zoo, and members of Friends of the National Zoo, receive a 10% discount.
