Woodley Park Spotlight Baked by Yael
Baked by Yael - The Best Cakepop Ever
Tell us a little bit about how long you’ve been in business and how you got started.
While practicing law at a large firm in DC, I baked as a stress reliever and brought in treats for my coworkers every Monday. My coworkers raved about my baked goods, and it gave me an opportunity to explore a creative side I never knew I had.
I founded Baked by Yael as an online bakery in 2010. It started as a side gig, but quickly grew into more. I had to choose between a secure, high-paying job and a business venture with tremendous risks, but also tremendous potential for profit and happiness. I left my law firm job in 2011.
In 2015, Baked by Yael opened its first brick-and-mortar shop, across from the National Zoo.
Why did you decide to locate in Woodley Park? What appeals to you about this neighborhood?
The neighbors in Woodley Park and Cleveland Park are incredibly supportive of local businesses. As a resident myself, it’s a pleasure to contribute another great amenity to the neighborhood. Being located directly across from the National Zoo also provides unparalleled access to millions of tourists every year.
